Day trips from Buenos Aires: Tigre, La Plata and Luján
Three easy escapes, what to see and how long each trip takes.
Buenos Aires is a good base for day trips. Three of the most popular are close enough to do in a day and very different from each other: a river delta, a planned city and a pilgrimage town.
Tigre: the Paraná Delta
North of the city, Tigre is the gateway to the Paraná Delta. It takes around 50 minutes to an hour by car, or about an hour by train from Retiro station. Highlights: boat rides through the delta channels, the Puerto de Frutos market, riverside cafés and the Museo de Arte Tigre.
La Plata: a planned city
La Plata is the capital of Buenos Aires province, southeast of the city. It takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half. Highlights: the neo-Gothic cathedral with its twin spires, the Museo de Ciencias Naturales and the long diagonal avenues of the city plan.
Luján: the Basilica
West of the city, Luján is known for its neo-Gothic Basilica and its role as a pilgrimage site. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours from Buenos Aires. Highlights: the Basilica, the museums and a slow-paced town center.
