Layover in Buenos Aires: what to do in 6, 8 or 10 hours
First check the numbers, then decide how much of the city fits.

With a long layover at Ezeiza you can see a slice of Buenos Aires, but only if the numbers work. Here is how to check.
How much time do you really have?
- About 1 hour to clear immigration and collect your bags.
- 45 to 60 minutes each way between the airport and the city, and more in traffic.
- Be back at the airport at least 3 hours before an international departure.
Rule of thumb: time in the city is your layover minus about 6 hours.
| Layover | Time in the city (approx.) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 6 hours | Little or none | Stay at the airport |
| 8 hours | About 2 hours | A short, focused visit |
| 10 hours | About 4 hours | A comfortable half-day |
| 12 hours or more | 6 hours or more | A full city tour |
These estimates assume no delays, so build in some margin.
With about 2 hours
Stay in the historic center: Plaza de Mayo and the surrounding square, and a short stroll along Avenida de Mayo for the architecture.
With about 4 hours
Add a neighborhood: Recoleta and its cemetery, or San Telmo with its old streets and cafΓ©s.
With 6 hours or more
Add La Boca, a walk through Puerto Madero or a long lunch. A private driver lets you cover more ground without worrying about the clock.
Before you decide
- Check the entry requirements for your nationality: you will have to pass immigration to leave the airport.
- If your flights are on separate tickets, you must collect and recheck your bags, so you need more time.
- If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you may not need to collect them. Ask your airline.
We offer private transfers and layover tours with a driver who tracks your flight and gets you back to the airport on time. Ask us for a quote.

Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the airport during a layover?
It depends on your nationality, the entry requirements and your airline's rules. Check them before you travel, because you will go through immigration.
Is a 6-hour layover enough to visit Buenos Aires?
Usually not. After immigration, travel in both directions and the time you need at the airport, little or no time is left.
What about my luggage?
If it is checked through to your final destination you may not need to collect it. With separate tickets you do, so allow more time.
Can you take me back to the airport on time?
Yes. Share your flight numbers and we plan the schedule, track your flight and get you back with a safe margin.
